FIG. 1 is a simplified side view of such a crank mechanism. FIG. 2 is a perspective view of one of the side plates 1a, 1b and a crank shaft 2. The side plate 1a is driven by a crank mechanism as illustrated in FIG. 2. As seen in FIG. 1, the side plate 1a has an inclined surface 4, the lower surface of which is connected to a lower end 5 of the crank shaft 2 by a pin 3. The lower end 5 is connected to the upper end of a piston rod 7a, which extends through the side plate 1b to an extension 7b. The piston rod 7a is connected to a piston 8. In operation, the piston rod 7a follows a linear reciprocating motion in a straight line, causing the crank shaft 2 to move a corresponding reciprocal linear motion along its axis, and thereby cause rotation of the piston 8.
It is also well known to convert reciprocating motion to rotary motion without using a crank mechanism, for instance, by connecting a piston rod to an eccentric to provide crank leverage. A prior art example of such an arrangement is shown in FIGS. 3-6.
