Nor is this your only option if you wish to use Finale for notation. It is, by no means, the only serious contender in the field. Other notetakers, such as Symphony, Symphony Pro and MusicXML, are out there and they’re free. Finale’s user-friendliness rating will not trouble anyone who is happy with the user interface elsewhere, but for those who wish to be guided into the amazing world of music notation software for the first time, it may not be the best choice.
Finale has always had an extremely keen and dedicated user base, and there will always be a place for it, at least in the medium term. If you’re looking for a notation system that offers cheap price and intuitive control, Finale is worth a look. It does not, however, teach you the many subtleties that Sibelius does, and it does not offer all the latest and best features. If you’re a hand-coder and don’t need any visual aids, or if you’re just not that bothered about MIDI, Finale is probably the ideal and most affordable notetaking package for you. If the graphics and sound features matter more to you than the ‘do-it-myself’ aspect of Finale’s user interface, Sibelius may be the better option.
In my experience, Finale seems to put most of its effort into making it easienotin use. The large Learning Library containing thousands of pages of music theoryinformation, often with a piano version alongside the notation, is easy to find, and the lessons and tutorials areeasy to navigate through. Although the tutorial tools do occasionally interfere with the learning experience, such as by leading you astray as to what you can do with a custom ribbon, they all turn out to be quite ingenious. Finale’s excellentCompanion feature even has some useful suggestions, such as asking you to make your changes to your score, and then checking whether you did it well enough to save a copy of your score for future sessions. Another helpful tool is the hidden ‘Manage authorised score’ function. You can access this by going into File > Manage authorised score, and passing the composer’s details into the dialog that follows. From there you can view, change and even restore previous files, no matter whether they’ve been saved as a Word DOC, PDF or something else. In many cases this dialog provides more accurate and useful information than any revision history you might find in your filestorage, although there is a very minor problem when it comes to managing very large projects. If you select an existing score entry at that point, it is permanently added to your list of entries, rather than being returned to the original configuration as it should be. The process of changing authors removes the existing entry from your selection list, so if you’re hoping to be able to go back to previous versions of the score, you can forget it.
