Ross, co-author of the study and scientist at the University of Colorado Boulder, in a statement. “In this work, we make use of a specially formulated resin to ensure an enhanced material strength, which allows us to fabricate much stronger and more useful bone and joint implants.” To prove the point, researchers first printed a conventional implant that is normally made by taking a piece of bone from a donor and breaking it down into particles to be used to create a mold. While the normal procedure requires several operations to create an implant, the researchers were able to print the same object, with the same detail, using the laser-resin method. The researchers were then able to compare the strength of both the conventional implant and the laser-resin printed implant. Results showed that the laser-printed implant is far stronger than the conventional implant. “The performance of this material here is unprecedented, it’s world leading,” said Krishna Shenoi, who was a co-author of the study.
