the rituale romanum was the very book used at the great exorcism scenes in earthly powers and the eve of saint venus. in the scene in the latter novel, the rector of the local seminary, rev. chauncell, is called in to exorcise a chair, and a tree with a strange bark, that the locals see as an evil omen. it is the chair and the bark that are being possessed. the rituale would have been the appropriate book to use for the exorcisms. in earthly powers , however, the exorcism is performed with the rituale of 1591. the rituale was the sacerdotal book used for the most solemn rites of exorcism and the entire ritual. the rituale was the book used in the exorcism of the veil of veronica in the eves of saint peter (1953).

this publication was initially used by the holy see to distribute the rites of the various local churches, but eventually, the ritual text was published in the form of a typical edition, regardless of whether the rite was authorized for use or not. the first edition of the rituale was published in 1614 in rome, and has not been changed since then.
