Many of the insights in this new report are centered on the four phases of customer journeys. Our goal is to help retailers anticipate opportunities that may have gone unperceived, helping them understand when, where, and how to engage with customers effectively.

The insights in this report come from academic and practitioner research, supported by a deep understanding of retail systems and a rich understanding of how people interact with those systems. In turn, this deep understanding requires a remarkable partnership with members of the retail sector. As we detail in the report, the academic researchers sit down with industry experts throughout the development process to extract the insight. We then test and refine those insights with retail practitioners and use the final results to turn that insight into actionable recommendations. With so many stakeholders contributing insight, it is not surprising that the final insights are sometimes very different than what we originally thought would work. Our solutions, however, are designed to be helpful and engaging and ask for nothing more of shoppers than the opportunity to be authentic with them.

By applying such insights to understanding customer behavior, retailers are creating the conditions for higher conversion, better customer lifetime value, and the ability to deliver unprecedented levels of service. This, in turn, will result in higher revenues, a more positive financial performance, and greater competitive advantage.

Although we identify many of our insights based on retail case studies, we do not seek to apply these insights universally. To do so would be inaccurate and detrimental to retail chains — the only companies capable of delivering the good enough customer experience for today, tomorrow, and beyond.

The third workshop was held as a special session during the Resilience 2017 conference in Stockholm, Sweden in August 2017. By the time of the conference, first drafts of the papers had been circulated and peer reviewed by other contributing authors. The presentations at the conference were aimed at providing key insights from the case studies to group critical emerging themes. During the session, the contributing authors elucidated and further refined more specific cross-cutting themes that emerged from each of the studies. From this, we used thematic clustering and reflective editing of the special issue to generate additional insights on transformations across the case studies. These form the bulk of the analytical material presented in Unpacking different phases of transformative spaces. For more information on the methods used in the individual cases, please see the respective papers. We have argued that transformative spaces are not a container for challenging power relations. We have also underlined that they should be considered as spaces of practice as they generate insight into what happens in and through practice. As such, transformative spaces are a site where new theories and epistemologies can be addressed and where new forms of knowledge can emerge. This includes knowledge that is critical and reflexive but also collaborative and in dialogue with the public. In addition, transformative spaces have to generate what we call potentialities. These are potentials for action that might be activated in and through practice. Potentialities are the materiality of transformative spaces. In being located as potentialities in the midst of social relations, they allow us to think about transformations not as finally achieved but as always being situated in new historical and social contexts. 5ec8ef588b
