Pretty much everyone loves this 2010 reboot of a franchise that had gone stale in the late 1980s. The timing was right, with solid ensemble cast headlined by an up-and-coming Melissa McCarthy as the spitting image of Leslie Nielsen s character (and the only female Ghostbusters) and a charismatic Bill Murray as the only knowable authority. Like the original film, the reboot is a love letter to classic and cheesy film, from the title font to some of the best chase scenes on film today. Its a fun, bouncy romp that will make you hoot when you think about it.
Were up on a pedestal, yes, but this is a film were so proud of its legacy that we cannot stop talking about. The 2015 sequel to the original Ghostbusters doesn t really try to explain what happened to the Ghostbusters in New York in 1984, since explaining it in full would require a book. Instead, we are treated to our first actual look at the ghosts from the original films ECTO-1, the original Ghostbusters handbook, and we find out the secret headquarters of the organization. Everyone (including the first sequel) gets back together, even though there is a serious reason to do so that has more to do with the New York Ghostbuster Museum than the cinematic value of the thing.
Ghostbusters II was the second of two movies made in 1989, and, while it is a sequel, it feels like a completely different movie. It has to do with time (almost 20 years later), events in the original film that have not been touched on (like where the Ghostbuster organization was when the first movie started) and a huge, gaping plot hole in a film that has no problem killing off one of its main characters in the opening scene (Spader). Part of this is a justification for the casting of Sigourney Weaver as Abby Yates (which seems kind of obvious now, but less so at the time), and part of it has to do with Bill Murray being in it, which sounds like a lot, but it turns out its only a few minutes of screen time. Its mostly a waste of time and a lot of actors trying to redeem the ideas of the original (like those talented, but underutilized Dan Aykroyd). Its also a sleazy, controversial look at abortion. Its not really in the same league of the original, but it is fun.
Its the perfect movie for a rainy Saturday. Though it wasn’t strictly a monster movie or a slasher film, it was still targeted at teens and twentysomethings in the 1980s. In fact, when Jeff Goldblum, who played physicist Ray Stantz, was in high school, he and his friends used to dress up and go bowling with friends as the Ghostbusters.Swayze was eager to emulate his own Ghostbusters character, doing a sort of impersonation of himself, Goldblum, and Dan Aykroyd, right down to his big wig and signature skeptical smirk. The original crew worked around the clock, rostered out to 16-hour shifts as in the real world the actors didnt sleep in on the weekends. This allowed them to shoot whenever they wanted, including the singular, 56-minute take of the film which was shot mostly in 40-minute takes for optimum efficiency. One day, set-up to get a shot of the three Ghostbusters assembled at the top of a building, Swayze threw his hand up to Goldberg and asked What should I do? In an instant, she grabbed his hand and held it for the rest of the shot to serve as the bookend. One common misconception is that the final shot of the film, showing the Ectomobile and trailer disappearing into the clouds, was a cutaway meant to expand the scope of the original film. This is true, but it was actually part of Swayze and Goldbergs crazy plan. They wanted to find a way to make it look like the movie was actually ending in mid-air, with the trailer flying away with all of the characters inside. They wanted it to look like the film had been reshot, and when their attempt failed, they decided to take what they had and go with it. Goldberg says, Theres this scene where the car is going up into the sky. I got it. I asked, Did this happen on the set, or did this happen after the fact? Reitman said after the fact, and I dont think we will see that again. I was like Okay, no problem. I got it. If I got it, I was going to make it, so I went home and asked the kids to please make it sound like we are really in the car going up into the sky. 5ec8ef588b
