another highlight of our series is to evaluate the relationship between the number of abscess and trophic state. abscess numbers of trophic 1 and 2 decreased from 9 to 6 in our series, whereas trophic 3 had the most number of abscess (15). the previous studies have also identified trophic 3 as the commonest trophic state (60-70%). in the asian region ala infestation was reported to occur more frequently in temperate regions (25-60%), whereas cold climate is reported to be a major contributing factor for ala [ 2 ]. most of the previous studies have revealed that ala is commonly found in regions with a tropical climate (86-100%) whereas at temperate or sub-tropical locations such as north america, europe, and new zealand, ala is extremely rare (4-28%) [ 2 ].
the ala morphology in trophic state also varies in shape, size, and location. in trophic 3, ala was spherical in shape ranging from 12 to 18 cm in size. whereas ala in trophic 2 and 1 were mostly lobulated, polygonal and ovoid in shape. generally, ala abscess in our study was lobulated in shape with mean size of 14.2 cm. a previous study reported that ala abscess in southeast asia were mostly polygonal and ovoid in shape, size of 10.1-28.8 cm [ 2 ].
the study also shows that the trophic state of the water strongly influences the trophic state of the macrophytes. indications that the presence of algae and higher trophic forms of water affects the response of the macrophytes were seen in the higher trophic water of lake 2 and 3. the leaves of the macrophytes within these lakes exhibited biomineral depositions both around the stomata and on the adaxial leaf surface. this is shown by sem and edax analyses of the biomineral particles around the stomata of leaves of e. crassipes in lake 2 and 3. it is clear that both the adaxial and abaxial epidermis of leaves of e. crassipes possess stomata with deposits on their walls. it is also clear that the deposits are transported through the roots and deposited around the stomata of the macrophytes during transpiration. hence, both the adaxial and abaxial epidermis of leaves of e. crassipes are affected by the trophic status of water. as a result, the macrophytes were found to have retarded growth and development. this was also evidenced by the study of the growth parameters of the macrophytes (table 6).
