in addition to the single player campaign, players can also access an online multiplayer mode to compete with players from around the world in a variety of game modes, including the aforementioned deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, king of the hill, and fireteam modes, as well as a three-on-three battle royale mode. the online multiplayer mode also features a competitive mode, where players can earn additional content by earning leaderboards points by defeating other players or completing tasks.
the game features downloadable content, or dlc, which can be purchased for the xbox 360, playstation 3, and pc versions of the game via the xbox live marketplace or playstation network. the first downloadable content pack, titled “captain scarlett and her pirate’s booty”, was released in april 2010 for the xbox 360. the second downloadable content pack, titled “mr. torgue’s campaign of carnage”, was released in may 2010 for the playstation 3 and xbox 360.
the game’s main story revolves around the player character, known as the “vault hunter”, as they search for a mysterious vault on the alien planet of pandora and bring its owner back to earth. although the vault hunter is not initially the main character, the player chooses from a variety of different playable characters who are playable in multiplayer missions and at the game’s various hubs. with the exception of the “krieg the psycho” character, each character has their own set of weapons, traits, and abilities.
on december 14th, 2014, gamespot’s sister site gamespot awarded borderlands 2 goty awards for best shooter and best multiplayer. the best shooter award went to the xbox 360 version, while the best multiplayer award went to the xbox one version.
