The following is a list of combat aircraft types that can be carried by Chinese carrier vessels as of 2018:
- The J-15 (F-15C or Shenyang J-15) is the new, most advanced main-wing-low-level airborne warfare aircraft in the People Liberation Army Air Force. Between 2013 and 2018, a total of 60 J-15s have been delivered to the People Liberation Army Air Force. The J-15 had its first test flight on May 27, 1997 at the Beijing Tech-Toys Factory. As of 2012, it is already considered a first-generation aircraft. In June 2012, the J-15 prototype and its first batch of J-15 Shenyang (the Chinese name for the plane) completed the Chengdu Aircraft Corp. J-15 basic fighter training program at Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corp. The training service includes three phases: phase 1 through phase 3, of which the latter two are most crucial in learning how to use the stealth fighter.
If one looks at the two Liaoning-class carriers available, one sees that the former Varyag has only a single fanjet catapult, as the Varyag was built for ski-jump launches. The present Liaoning has multiple catapult arrangements and the later Kuznetsov-built Wenchang has two to four fanjets. The ski jump on a flat deck design also brings other important restrictions. Aircraft cannot take off fully loaded, and even if an aircraft does take off under full load, it is also limited in the sort of missions it can perform. Once in the air, Liaoning would face two significant challenges.
1. The decks limit number of aircraft it can carry. Under the carrier Varyags ski jump, the deck area is severely restricted. The deck amidships is much too small to support a full compliment of aircraft and is further limited as a catapult deck by the constraints of the early type ski jump. This limits the Chinese Air Force to a much smaller presence than it could otherwise support, and in some roles would completely negate the advantages of having a carrier. The situation for the J-15 is not much different. It appears that the aircraft is to be launched from the ski jump of the former Varyag (perhaps with modifications to overcome its limitations). The Liaoning is to be launched from a more powerful ski jump, and may have a longer runway. These changes would provide the J-15 with room for four aircraft if this is used in a conventional role. With the J-20 and J-31 in the wings, however, any aircraft capable of operating from this ski jump would serve a much greater mission as an assault carrier that would have a significantly larger strike package. China has long presented itself to the world as rising up from a low starting point to a competitive global player, and its aircraft carriers do nothing to contradict this image; they are the only large vessels, besides a handful of ships of the Soviet era, in the Chinese navy. That said, the aircraft carriers of Japan, South Korea, Australia and others are important, perhaps more important, symbols of regional military power and prestige, and of the axis of regional power. A Chinese aircraft carrier sent to South Korea or Japan would be a significant step in that countrys transition from security state to great-power status. In any case, China seems perfectly ready to view Beijing as an aspirant great power, and at this early stage of development is content to project an image of modesty. China on the other hand, like the U.S., appreciates its aircraft carrier as a symbol of its status in the region. China is willing to share information about the J-15 and its sister aircraft, the J-20 and J-31. A Chinese Navy official told Janeís Janeís in May of 2010 that there would be no greater achievement in the Navy than to design an aircraft carrier in Chinese style, and follow it with mass production. If true, then the J-15 may become China Air Forces first operational fighter, able to enter service by 2014. The J-15 combination carrier, J-20 carrier-based airlifter and J-31 air superiority fighter are to succeed the J-7 Changhe, which entered service in 2006. China has hinted that J-15 and J-20 might be capable of carrying long-range strike missiles, similar to Tomahawk-class missiles (as the U.S.Navy has and will continue to deploy long-range Tomahawk missiles), in the future. China began naval construction of a carrier using Kuznetsov NK-33s in 2006, and the first metal began pouring in November 2012 (see Tajikistan Daily News ); in case you want to know the speed of that), but it is only a decade and a half ahead of the U.S. Navy. If so, China will be two carriers ahead of the U.S. by 2016, and four carriers ahead by 2025. When the J-15 is rolled out, or when it can finally fly, then the carrier will signal to the world that Chinas naval aviation has grown significantly.
