it was probably inevitable that marvel’s latest miniseries would be a bit of a mess. the gap between the end of supercrooks and this ongoing was obviously enough for marvel to combine the two, and the resulting series. even if you are a fan of the character, it is hard to argue that this is a good miniseries.
the good news is that its not too late to catch up. the first three issues are available online, and can be read in any order. that said, you may want to start with the first issue, since its the easiest to get into, and the characters have been established a bit better. there is a bit of a whirlwind of a story here, which makes it a bit hard to keep track of, and it takes a while to get going, but once it does, it is a lot of fun. you won’t miss much if you don’t start at the beginning, though, as the story moves at a decent clip, and it all comes together really well at the end.
the version of supercrooks that we have been given is the gn 2.0 version, so we are missing out on a few of the extras that were in the original version, but it has been pretty good without it.the creation of a five issue mini-series to tie in with kickass was probably too big of an undertaking for marvel’s powers that be, and the trades have been pretty short.
if you are a fan of the characters, and you like the idea of hit-girl set in a world where superheroes are a real part of society, then this is definitely worth checking out. its highly unlikely that you’ll find it in the store anymore, but you can find the original version of the book directly online, and you can find it with a kindle version as well. it has a nice flow of character development for a superhero series that isn’t just a boys club, and the art has been pretty solid throughout. we would have liked to have seen more development of the villain, but the character is more of a secondary part of this first issue.
the main problem is that it isn’t a great story, and the characters are pretty one-dimensional.
