at the same time, the school saw a record number of students in its attendance area—more than 30 percent of its students—attend charter schools in the district and surrounding schools. some administrators in the district worried that these students were headed for a school system that was increasingly hostile to them.

k1 kids is a community initiative, supported by sir mick jagger, that has been set up to supply mosquito nets to countries that suffer from malaria, a disease that kills more people in a year than all the preventable diseases combined and up to 800,000 children each year.

at k1 kids, we believe that every child deserves the freedom from disease that comes from access to a healthy environment. we believe that everyone has the right to a healthy future and we want to help families across the uk live the life they deserve – with the right to go about their day without the fear of malaria.

every minute of every day, we see babies and children suffering from horrible illnesses and diseases like malaria. they could easily be saved if it weren’t for the fact that they live in places where they dont have the means to buy mosquito nets.

this year, k1 kids has secured access to 250,000 mosquito nets to deliver to families living in the hardest to reach parts of the uk and we now need to raise a further £500,000 to get to 1.2 million people living in those regions.

k1 kids is an initiative led by charities and supported by the police, but unlike other police-led initiatives such as operation yellowhammer, we dont set targets, we dont ask for donations and we dont log the money you give. instead, the money you give will be given to our partner charity, malaria no more (mnm) which will then distribute the nets to our very deserving families.

my first day of school was may 24, 1998. i was eight years old and a girl named alyshia was there to take me in, a foster child who had been placed with her when she was six months old. my mother had custody and had raised me with her friends but this little girl with bright eyes and a joyful disposition, was different, a special little girl. over the coming months alyshia would become a close friend, a counselor, and a great teacher to me. as a teacher myself, i watched her ability to build trusting relationships with her students and families and i could not have known that alyshia’s kindness and wisdom would become so important to me, and so much a part of my life. in its 2014 national survey of adolescent health, the centers for disease control and prevention found that 9.6% of u.s. teens aged 13 to 17 experienced a serious emotional crisis in the past year. of those teens, 40.8% reported being suicidal. in 2015, the suicide rate in the u. among teens was at an all-time high, and suicide remains the second-leading cause of death for u. teens. the number of teenagers struggling with an eating disorder has been estimated to be at least 12 million, and has been growing faster than any other group of youth. the primary risk factor for this emerging mental illness among teenagers, though, is having a friend who is struggling with an eating disorder. sadly, many times it is a girl who struggles alone in this fight, until she finds a friend who is also going through the same thing. the association for child development and abuse (acda) is a nonprofit organization that provides resources, information, and support to the individuals, families, professionals, and organizations involved in child protection and child abuse prevention. its services include training, technical assistance, and public education regarding these issues. acda also maintains a comprehensive library of documents and publications, and a national hotline, 1-800-657-2879, which provides crisis intervention. the hotline, along with the parent and family resources on the web site, is the mainstay of the association’s child-abuse prevention program, and the public education and training efforts of the association. 5ec8ef588b
