to support the development of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors among university students, the institute set out to build on its existing expertise in health promotion research and development to create a new program. a new program aimed at tertiary education students was conceptualized, and a plan and rationale for the development of the program was established.

the program was then developed by building on the existing institute’s research and development expertise in the area of lifestyle interventions in the tertiary education setting. the program was based on an evidence-based approach that has been developed by the institute with the aim to improve health behaviors and help to prevent the development of chronic disease. the program, called the university healthy activities program, consisted of a series of lectures, small group work, and individualized support sessions.

there is an urgent need for targeted intervention strategies to improve the health of university and college students. with the observation that a great proportion of students do not meet physical activity recommendations [ 10 ] and the belief that physical activity in this group is sub-optimal, an intervention to promote physical activity amongst university/college students is a timely and appropriate opportunity. this review examined the effectiveness of strategies to improve physical activity, nutrition and weight loss behaviors amongst university and college students.

our review also suggested that physical activity interventions have been successful for improving physical activity, and weight loss behaviors amongst university students. this review identified that there is a need for future research investigating the effectiveness of physical activity, nutrition and weight-loss strategies in this group. in addition, there is a need for future research examining the effectiveness of interventions targeting physical activity, nutrition and weight-loss behaviors amongst university/college students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. finally, strategies should be explored to address the common barriers encountered by students in engaging in physical activity and nutrition/weight-loss behaviors.




this paper presents a systematic review of the evidence of the effectiveness of interventions to promote a healthy lifestyle in university students. the findings of this review will have implications for practitioners, policy makers, and researchers planning or evaluating such programs. the review included studies that had interventions aiming to improve dietary, physical activity, weight, or a combination of these behaviors in university students. a detailed search of the literature identified 4,353 references. after removal of duplicates, 3,311 papers were screened by title and abstract. only 21 studies were considered eligible for the review. reasons for exclusion were given for each study. the quality of the studies included in the review was assessed using the effective public health practice project (ephpp) quality assessment tool for quantitative studies. the university healthy activities program was specifically developed to assist tertiary education students with healthy lifestyle choices within the university/college setting. the program involves: setting a target for healthy lifestyle behaviors among students at wayne university. building on wayne’s existing expertise in health promotion research and development. identifying evidence-based strategies and approaches to address the barriers to and facilitators of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors. creating a student-centered approach to lifestyle interventions within the tertiary education setting. providing programs that include lecture, small group work, and individualized support sessions. using teaching methods that are consistent with the needs of tertiary education students. providing programs that are consistent with the university’s values and mission and that align with national and international strategies and initiatives. using a holistic approach to health promotion that targets multiple risk factors. appropriately engaging with and involving students from a range of disciplines and backgrounds to maximize learning and maximize student outcomes. delivering programs that are contextually appropriate and that are delivered in a flexible manner to accommodate different learning styles and needs. delivering programs to a student body that is in a learning environment. 5ec8ef588b
