The brain, initially identified as a dinosaur after its discovery in 2000 in Tanzania, is the size of a walnut. It belonged to a small, close-knit group of dinosaurs called the Coelurosaurs, a group that included Velociraptors, Dromaeosaurs, and birds. “If a dinosaur’s brain has a volume of approximately 100 cm³ (just under 4 liters), that of a human brain is around 12,000 cm³ (2.5 kg),” Antonio Luque, a paleoanthropologist at the National Museum of Natural History in Madrid and the only person to have seen the brain in person, told NBC News MACH in an email. The size of the brain pales in comparison to a human’s, Luque said, but that’s more a testament to “the exceptional quality of the fossil and the skill of its preparation,” because the skull alone can be up to 10 times the volume of the brain, he said.
