this is the first western-style temple. king senacheri established a matham (entertaining courtyard) in the first century b.c., and since then this temple has been a destination for the devout, the seeker of religious experience and the seeker of miracles. the temple was the last stop for the chandi paribara, the “veda dasa” mentioned in the ramayana.
shri subramanya temple at srirangam in tamil nadu, india is dedicated to the hindu god muruga. it is the largest temple of subramania and is one of the largest hindu temples in the world. temple with a nine-tiered rajagopuram (tower with needle-like spires) and enclosing a vast courtyard, called “nandi mandapam” (depicting nandi, vehicle of muruga). this temple is popularly known as “kailasanathar temple”.
the combination of massive scale, elegance of details and meticulous workmanship is unparalleled. it is also believed that lord muruga had descended here to destroy the demons led by ravana. the idols of muruga and his consort parvati are carved in fine granite. the temple is enshrined by a gigantic magnificient statue of lord subramania which is 16 ft. tall. the temple is supposed to have been built in the 10th century. it is well known for its magnificent carvings, the most notable being the sivatami festival stone inscriptions from the 12th century, a stunning piece of work, originating from 11th-century chola empire. one can actually see with their eyes how a king or queen would have looked like during 11th-century india. the temple is also famous for its intricate doors.
